Purpose of research: Basic research
Epicuticular wax layers are often discussed as natural resistance barriers against different plant pathogenes. Experiments to cross the character „leaf glow“ (wax) serve to improve resistance properties of Daucus varieties (IGK, Dr. Nothnagel). Generally a time-saving method for the assessment of crossing result regarding the wax layer is very important. First experiments with a IR (infrared) microscope and a ATR (attenuated total reflectance) objective demonstrated the applicability of this spectroscopic technique for this topic. The aim is to develop microspectroscopic methods for a time-saving characterisation of leaf and fruit surfaces to support decisions and explanations in crossing experiments.
