Genetic resources: Collection and preservation of food related microorganisms focussing on Listeria, Enterobacteria and Lactobacilli)
Project
Project code: MRI-OG-02-24
Contract period: 01.01.2001
- 31.07.2018
Purpose of research: Inventory & Assessment
This task has the goal to support the information system of the ZADI with data over the biological diversity. A national programme under the title MGRDEU BMVEL was initiated in the year 2000 and the Ministry (BMVEL) accepted the responsibility for maintenance preservation and use of genetic resources for nutrition, agriculture and forests. This comprised all culture collections of bacteria of the federal research institutes, belonging to BMVEL, which were documented and published as on-line database. The institute OG supports the MGRDEU project, by making its data available. Frequently occurring pathogenic strains of Enterobacteriaceae and Listeria spp. as well as not-pathogenic lactic acid bacteria in food have particularly been examined in our institute for biological diversity. Listeria monocytogenes could be isolated from different foods, especially ready-to-eat and vacuum-packed products. More than 700 isolates of Listeria spp. were collected in the MRI strain collection and have been characterised by biochemical and genotypic methods. All information about isolated strains flow into the database and is accessible to other German partners.
