Economic Aspects of the Inclusion of Sinks in Climate Policy
Project
Project code: vTI-OEF-02-1.10
Contract period: 01.08.2005
- 31.07.2009
Purpose of research: Applied research
The start of European Emission Trading as well as the Kyoto Protocol’s entry into force in 2005 has armed international climate protection policy with some concrete implementation instruments. The project “Economic Aspects of the Inclusion of Sinks in Climate Policy” addresses possibilities for the future design and development of these instruments as well as their potential impact on German forest policy. Questions addressed by the project which will become relevant for policy making in the near future are for example: Which impacts would a national decision for forest management according to article 3.4 KP have in financial terms and terms of environmental and climate policy? Which options exist for an inclusion of forestry in the past-2012 development of the Kyoto Protocol and of the European Emission Trading System? How can the international climate protection regime be further developed in order to avoid emissions from deforestation in developing countries? How could forest products be included in climate targets, and which effects would have to be expected in economic terms and in terms of climate and environmental policy? Which economic opportunities arise from the international climate policy for German forest enterprises?
