Creation of fennel (Foeniculum vulgare) lines with stable male sterility
Project
Project code: JKI-ZGO-08-4150
Contract period: 01.01.2012
- 31.12.2019
Purpose of research: Applied research
Fennel (Foeniculum vulgare) belongs to the family Umbelliferae. It is perennial. Besides bitter fennel (ssp. piperitum), the species also comprises the so called garden fennel (ssp. vulgare) with medicinally used fennel, also referred to as bitter fennel (var. vulgare), roman fennel or sweet fennel (var. dulce) and Florence fennel as vegetable (var. azoricum). Because of the medicinal use, all work in the project will be done only on bitter fennel (Foeniculum vulgare var. vulgare). Besides the use as spice for bakery products, meat and vegetable dishes it has an appetizing and digestive effect. Fennel is also acting against aerogastrocolia, diuretic, sputum supporting and antispasmodic. Fennel fruits contain an essential oil with 50 to 60 % anethole and about 20 % fenchone as major components. Progenies of crossings for combination of the characters small seeds and resistance to anthracnose of fennel, caused by the fungus Mycosphaerella anethi, showed male sterile plants. The availability of a system for pollination control in fennel offers the opportunity for use of hypothetical heterosis effects and efficient prevention of unlimited reproduction. In this project period, findings of male sterility type by help of histological methods and for viability of pollen will be ascertained on the basis of the existing material. From this, a reliable assessment results as for stability of male fertility also for weather conditions in different years/for different annual weather conditions. If cytoplasmatic male sterility is available, lines without segregation will be created. At the same time the search for suitable maintainers and restorers will be continued.
