Impacts of extreme weather on plant pests and their influence on productivity and quality

Under the current climate, plant pests represent a major constraint to crop production. Plant pest will be influenced by climate change, which is likely to increase the frequency and intensity of weather extremes as well. Thus it could be possible that extreme weather will influence the economic impact of plant pests. First step is analyzing scientific literature published since 1945 concerning the knowledge about the influences of extreme weather events (such as storm, hail, flooding, dryness, drought, heavy down pours, black frost, early frost, late frost, heat, wet snow) on incidence of plant pests and their influences on yield and quality of wheat, barley, maize, beet, potato, rape, forage crops and grassland, wine, hope, apple and asparagus. Second step is to establish a screening experimental system to investigate the influences of extreme weather events on cereals, especially winter wheat. A first experiment is about determining the impacts of flooding and drought on Fusarium spp. and winter wheat.
For field crops 1 600 000 single combinations and for minor crops 848 263 single combinations were queried until January 2015. The data base identified 387 papers concerning the influences of extreme weather on incidence of pests of wheat, barley, maize, beet, potato, rape, forage crops and grassland and 46 papers of pests of wine, hope, apple and asparagus. After considering the results of secondary analysis only 71 papers were relevant to describe influences of extreme weather on pests of field crops, and 14 were relevant to pests of minor crops.
