Purpose of research: Applied research
The aim of INSPIRE is to substantially improve knowledge for a sustainable utilization of commercial fish species in the Baltic Sea. Fishery species such as herring, sprat, cod and flounder are also important ecological key species in the ocean food web. Present knowledge gaps exist at mechanisms of spatial distribution of fish life stages, on the effect of climate change and exploitation on ecosystem structures and functions including the perception of these stressors in current stock assessment techniques. Basic questions to be addressed in INSPIRE are 1. Which habitat variables characterize the spatial distribution of cod, herring, sprat and flounder? 2. To what extent is local and regional fish distribution affected by fishery and natural mortality? 3. Which factors determine habitat connectivity and migration of species or populations? 4. In which ways do population structures affect stock assessments? The general approach of INSPIRE will generate new data and operational models for improved predictions on spatial distribution and habitat requirements of fishery species
