Sensor based detection of patterns of nutrient contents and nutrient availability in soil
Project
Project code: 0315530A
Contract period: 01.10.2009
- 30.09.2014
Purpose of research: Basic research
Soil use and management is usually done uniformly within an arable site, independent of its size (< 1 - > 100ha). Activities are based on analyses that more or less represent average values for the corresponding site. But, in reality almost all soil characteristics reveal a distinct within field variability so that a uniform management does not meet the requirements for many parts of the site. Without a detailed detection and quantification of soil heterogeneity it is not possible to govern the growth of crops precisely. Therefore, a main aim of this sub-project is to optimize the online detection of soil parameters, that are responsible for the development of plant stands.
Mid infrared spectroscopy (MIRS) will be refined to a minimum-invasive routine analysis of soil characteristics. MIRS is the linkage between an elaborate con-ventional soil survey and our new non-invasive online sensors. After an adequate calibration we will use mobile, tractor based sensors (near infrared and γ-spectrometer) to quantify main nutrient parameters (Corg, humus quality, N, P, K, CaCO3, texture, pedogenic oxides). The fusion of different sensors that work in parallel will provide synergistic effect and will allow to create high resolution maps efficiently. The subsequent adoption of airborne sensors (HyMap + γ-spectrometry) will explore the potentials of a large-scale exploration of soil parameters.
