Physiological response of potatoes to simultaneous drought/heat stress and the development of selection criteria for tolerant plant material
Project
Project code: JKI-RS-08-3362
Contract period: 01.05.2007
- 31.12.2012
Purpose of research: Basic research
The potato belongs to the crops which respond even today sensitively to drought stress periods. Moreover, it is known that high temperatures reduce tuber growth and, therefore, yield. The beginning climate change increases the probability of our cultivated plants being subjected to drought and heat stress simultaneously during vegetation period. As these stress factors act very complex on plant growth, it is necessary to look not only for effects of the single factors, but to consider also their mutual effects on the plant. Based on trials under controlled cultivation conditions, characters with assumed suitability as indirect selection criteria will be investigated. Following that, traits or trait complexes shall be identified by means of statistical analysis (cluster analysis, multiple component analysis), which allow the selection of genotypes tolerating the simultaneous occurrence of both stresses better.
