Selection and investigation of black alders (Alnus glutinosa (L.) Gaertn.) on resistance towards Phytophthora alni. Subproject: JKI
Project
Project code: JKI-GF-08-1175, 22022011
Contract period: 01.08.2015
- 31.07.2018
Budget: 264,310 Euro
Purpose of research: Applied research
The project has the following aims: Identification and selection of black alders resistant towards Phytophthora alni and development of a standard test for screening of resistance. The roots of selected alder clones that are infected with P. alni will be studied with histological techniques.
Since the 1990s alders in Europe have been infected by the fungal-like pathogens Phytophthora × alni, P. × multiformis and P. uniformis. That resulted in serious damage to alder stands in forests and along river banks and had a severe impact on flood defence. Control of the pathogen with chemicals is not allowed outside of nurseries. Therefore, the project had the following aims: Identification and selection of black alders resistant towards Phytophthora × alni, P. × multiformis and P. uniformis as well as the development of a standardised test for resistance screening. The roots of infected alder clones and seedlings were studied with histological techniques.
