An European Integrated In Situ Management Workplan: Implementing Genetic Reserve and On Farm Concepts (AEGRO)
Project
Project code: JKI-ZL-08-1139
Contract period: 01.10.2007
- 30.09.2010
Purpose of research: Inventory & Assessment
If selected populations of a species are actively managed within its natural distribution area, the subarea concerned is then called a ?genetic reserve?. The selected populations should represent the total genetic diversity of a species. In situ maintenance is condition for the continued adaptation of species to changing environmental conditions. Within the EU the practical application of this concept is still pending, as a therefor suitable implementation strategy is equally lacking as for the on farm management of landraces. The exemplary development of national strategies for the in situ management of crop wild relatives as well as landraces in the 7 partner countries is a major objective of the project. Next to the coordination of the project the JKI contributes to work package 6 (case study Beta) and 10 (data models, data bases) and it supports the establishment of a web-based help desk.
