Development of the GIS-based risk indicator SYNOPS-GIS for identification and analysis of areas with increased environmental risk related to the use of chemical plant protection products (hot-spot analysis)

The indicator model SYNOPS-GIS assesses aquatic and terrestrial risk at the field level, which then can be aggregated at variable spatial levels. SYNOPS calculates the loads and concentrations for three non-target compartments which are exposed with pesticides by different pathways. For the soil direct loads regarding interception, for the field margins drift and for the surface water drift, run-off erosion and drainage are considered as exposure pathways. The spatial input data required for the risk assessment are derived and continuously updated from existing data sets as ATKIS, land parcel information system (LIPS), digital soil maps, European soil map, weather and climate data from the German Weather Service (DWD). Furthermore, records that describe the use of pesticides are linked to the BVL product database and an active ingredient database which are updated regularly. This application- specific data is linked with the spatial environmental parameters and the risk potential is analyzed on spatial level. Based on the three surveys on pesticide use conducted within the Institute SF (demonstration farms, reference farms and the PAPA-survey) the spatial risk will be analyzed and compared. In addition a module to assess the risk for beneficial organisms by PPP's is developed in collaboration with the Institute ÖPV. Furthermore, an Internet based SYNOPS application is developed to facilitate the risk analysis of individual PSM strategies under realistic environmental conditions ( SYNOPS WEB).
