The source of infection with STEC / EHEC bacteria for humans is often unknown. Infections can occur through contact with infected people and animals, but also through consumption of STEC contaminated food. By analysis of STEC characteristics such as serotype and virulence genes we want to explore if and to what extent STEC from meat, and dairy products can be linked with human disease. Certain types of STEC, as well as certain toxins of the Stx family have been associated with an increased potential of the bacteria for causing disease. In this project we want to determine which serotypes of STEC are equally isolated from foodstuff and from patients. Furthermore, we want to explore if the origin (producer animal, food properties) of the foodstuff can be linked with an increased potential of the STEC isolates to cause disease in humans. The results of this study will help in developing better and targeted prevention strategies against foodborne STEC infections in humans. Food types that are linked with an increased risk for STEC infections in humans (producer animal , product properties) will be identified.
