Pilot study for the development of a provenance-identification-system for forest reproductive material
Project
Project code: vTI-FG-08-31
Contract period: 01.06.2005
- 30.06.2008
Purpose of research: Applied research
Until now in Germany the origin and identity of forest reproductive material during marketing is nearly exclusively proofed by written documents. Hereby a scientifically founded control of the origin of the reproductive material is not possible. We will demonstrate and test in frame of a pilot study the development of an origin-identification-system for forest reproductive material based on the application of highly variable DNA-markers. With microsatellites we will identify and register the genetic fingerprints of reproductive trees in admitted oak stands and compare their genotypes with those of doubtful reproductive material. With this method it should be possible to clearly detect or clearly exclude the origin from an admitted stand, even for single plants. The project follows an urgent call for action in this area of consumer protection.
