Development of coloured carrots for organic production, subproject 2
Project
Project code: 2810OE110
Contract period: 01.11.2011
- 31.10.2014
Budget: 96,154 Euro
Purpose of research: Applied research
Aim of the project was the development of coloured carrots for the organic production. The pre-breeding project included intensive selection and crossing approaches as well as tests for productivity, quality, contents and resistance to diseases. Furthermore, promising breeding lines were tested under field conditions on organic farms, and possibilities of marketing and storage proved.
As project output, an extensive breeding material in all colour classes is available. Shape and colour variation is adequately realised. Further breeding requirements exist for inner and outer root quality, bolting resistance and tolerance to abiotic and biotic stress.
The breeding programme 'Breeding Coloured Carrots' was established at the 'satimex' company. Three breeding lines are currently in the preliminary examination for possible variety approval. The application for variety registration of a purple carrot line is being prepared and planned for 2016. The company 'satimex' is the new German breeding partner for organic coloured carrot seeds.
Prospects for scientific follow-up projects are given by the extreme genetic and morphological variability of the developed plant material. Research approaches are seen especially within i) improving the resistance to all red coloured carrots, ii) the genetic analysis of the flowering and bolting behaviour and iii) the development of molecular markers on basis of the chemical and sensory analyses.
