Phytochemicals do have a number of positive effects on human health. Because of that they present an important proof of quality to the consumer. For breeding and for organic farming phytochemicals will present an important characteristic for wheat varieties in the future.
In organic grain breeding there is a focus on stable yields and high quality, and even more there has to be strengthening overall plant resistance, broad field tolerance against pests and diseases. Therefore is postulated that organically bred wheat activate more plant specific defence mechanisms (=phytochemicals).
The objective of this study is to examine whether organically bred cultivars are different in content and in composition of phytochemicals from conventionally bred cultivars under conditions of organic farming. Therefore seven wheat varieties from the regional organic farming trials with winter wheat (Öko-Landessortenversuche, german governmental funded project BÖL-Projekt 2809OE 009 ) will be analyzed. To indicate the importance of the factors location and year, varieties are studied from three sites over three years.
The samples will be analyzed by the Institute of Nutrition (FSU Jena). Secondary plant compounds from the groups tocols, carotenoids and phenolic acids will be analyzed by HPLC.
