Phenotyping of potato genotypes with regard to drought stress
Project
Project code: JKI-RS-08-3364
Contract period: 01.05.2007
- 31.12.2011
Purpose of research: Basic research
In Central Europe drought limits the growth and the development of many cultivated plants to an increasing degree. In view of the prognosticated climate changes and the following complex consequences for an economic and at the same time environmentally friendly agriculture the importance of drought tolerance will increase considerably. It is known that also the potato reacts sensitively to water deficit. So drought stress induces, depending on the stress intensity and the physiological conditions of the whole plant, various modifications in the metabolism with the consequence of changed yields, yield stabilities and qualities of the tubers. For the improvement of the drought tolerance it is necessary to measure relevant morphological, physiological and biochemical characters which can serve as selection criteria. To this end test sets of potatoes which include both drought tolerant and sensitive genotypes will be evaluated under control and different stress conditions (rain-out-shelter). The selection of the genotypes is carried out together with potato breeders. The aim of the project is a comprehensive phenotyping of the plant material in order to establish the prerequisites for the identification of molecular markers.
