The institute presently accomodates two department-independent groups. The project group 'Molecular Geomicrobiology' is headed by Michael W. Friedrich (since 2005) and the 'free floater' group 'Prokaryotic Cell Biology' is headed by Martin Thanbichler (since 2007). The department-independent junior group leader position of the institute is presently vacant.
