Investigation on residues of Bacillus thuringiensis endospores on tomato and sweet pepper cultivated in greenhouses
Project
Project code: JKI-BI-08-1224
Contract period: 01.11.2015
- 30.06.2016
Purpose of research: Applied research
Bacillus thuringiensis (B.t.) is the most important biological plant protection agent in Germany and is used for the control of Noctuidae larva on tomato fruits in greenhouses and belongs to the group of presumptive Bacillus cereus species. Within this project tomatoes and sweet pepper will be applied with a commercial Bt-product in commercial greenhouses and the residues of endospores will be analyzed. To prove the degradation of B.t. spores under protected greenhouse conditions over time, a series of samples will be taken after the last application over one week.
The aim was to investigate residues of the product XenTari® as colony forming units (CFU) per gram freshweight on sweet pepper and tomato. In both cases the cultures were grown in the greenhouse. Specific attention was paid to the guide value of 100.000 CFU/g freshweight. Residues could be found on all samples, which were in most cases under the guide value. Untreated controls showed lower amounts of CFU. Residues on sweet pepper and tomato were nearly similar.
