Biological control of clubroot disease on the resistant oilseed rape variety 'Mendel' by enophytic fungi

Purpose of research: Applied research
Plasmodiophora brassicae, a soilborne and obligate biotroph pathogen, is the causal agent of clubroot disease of oilseed rape (Brassica napus; OSR) and other crucifers. The pathogen has a complex bi-phasic life cycle that leads to the production of hundreds of resting spores in infected root cells that are liberated after the death of the host plant and infect new crop plants in consecutive years. Due to this complex life cycle the control of this soil borne protist is difficult to achieve. In previous studies we have identified the endophyte Acremonium alternatum, to show promising antagonistic effects in clubroot-infected Arabidopsis thaliana and Chinese cabbage (Brassica rapa). During coming project we will describe the effect of A. alternatum on the growth, development and clubroot control of oilseed rape (Brassica napus) varieties.
