Validation Study Human Exposure of Non-Professionals to Wood Preservatives
Project
Project code: BfR-CHS-02-D 1330-100
Contract period: 01.01.2004
- 31.08.2005
Purpose of research: Inventory & Assessment
For the coming approval procedure for wood preservatives according to the national regulations a complete and realistic estimation of the primary exposure of users and the secondary exposure of consumers is an indispensable precondition.According to German and Austrian considerations the TECHNICAL NOTES FOR GUIDANCE - HUMAN EXPOSURE TO BIOCIDAL PRODUCTS - GUIDANCE ON EXPOSURE ESTIMATION of the European Commission may cause overexposure of consumers and risks for human health. A joint German-Austrian study based on experimental analyses for the assessment of human exposure of non-professionals to wood preservatives shall provide a more realistic database for the selection of statistical confidence bands (percentiles).A multi-factorial approach will be applied to demonstrate that it is possible to estimate percentiles with a small number of individuals and tests by quantifying the underlying influence factors. The study will be designed to obtain more precise data for the assessment of exposure and for the assessment of risk for human health. Therefore the project is crucial for the assessment of the impact of biocides both within the framework of Annex I of the directive 98/08/EG and the national biocides regulation. With the results of the study Germany and Austria will contribute to the validation of exposure scenarios and exposure models to be developed. The results may also contribute for further OECD wide harmonization of assessment procedures.
