Guttation in Winter oilseed rape- a possible water source for honeybees?

Purpose of research: Applied research
Systemic seed treatments are indispensible for WOSR crops in Germany. At present active substances from the substance class neonicotinoids are nation-wide in use. These substances are systemic, in soil and plants rather persistent and have a high intrinsic bee toxicity. A.S. used in systemic seed treatment can be translocated into Nectar and Pollen in not-critical amounts. Furthermore, Winter oilseed rape plants could also release a.s. above the soil surface via Guttation droplets which has not yet been regarded in risk assessment. The exsudation called guttation is especially known in greenhouse plants. Clear fluids are released an the tip of leaves. It needs to be clarified if this also occurs in WOSR crops and if guttation droplets are used as a water source by honey bee colonies in the surrounding. Many pesticides that are not hazardous for bees are toxic under laboratory conditions. Thus, for risk assessment the risk and toxicity is examined under laboratory conditions. In semi-field and field studies the hazard under practical conditions is examined. In this project semi-field and field trials will be conducted and will allow a risk assessment considering practical realistic conditions.
