Breeding, cultivation and utilization of Russian Dandelion (Taraxacum koksaghyz) - turning a wild plant into an industrial sustainable resource crop

Purpose of research: Applied research
The aim of the project is to promote Russian Dandelion as a home-grown rubber resource. To this end, breeding research shall be performed to adapt this wild species to agronomical requirements. Further activities are meant to establish a value-added chain for a systematic use of this species. The project encompasses five work-packages focussed, respectively, breeding methods, breeding for improved rubber yield, agronomic practice for seeding and seed refinement, processing and assessment of raw materials, and social acceptance. This sub-project picks up results obtained in a previous project (TAKOW IND) to develop a breeding strategy for establishing Russian dandelion as a rubber crop which adds to a sustainable bioeconomy. Field data on rubber contents in a mapping population were sampled to identify and genetically map QTLs related to rubber content and to develop trait-associated molecular markers. Furthermore, questions relating to overcoming self-incompatibility in Russian dandelion and to improving resistance to powdery mildew will be addressed.
