Collaborative project BIOTA South III: modelling of savannah dynamics (S-D8) fragmentation in agricultural landscapes (S-D5)
Project
Project code: 01LC0624I
Contract period: 01.01.2007
- 31.12.2009
Budget: 855,871 Euro
Purpose of research: Basic research
Savannas cover approximately 20% of the earth’s land surface and 40% of Africa. A large part of these unique areas are endangered by degradation caused by overutilization and climatic changes. Increasing population growth rates lead to unsustainable land use strategies that are non-adapted to these fragile landscapes. Furthermore predicted climatic changes lead to new environmental conditions and savanna rangeland might respond negatively to previously successful management strategies.
