Collaborative project: Breeding of oilseed rape with resistance to insect pests favoured by climate change – Subproject 3
Project
Project code: 2814507110
Contract period: 01.11.2010
- 31.12.2013
Budget: 127,016 Euro
Purpose of research: Experimental development
As a consequence of climate change, the attack of winter oilseed rape (Brassica napus L.) by various insects is expected to increase, because their population dynamic is influenced much by the ambient temperature curve. Hence, breeding for insect resistance in winter oilseed rape is gaining importance. Aim of the present project is to screen a genetically divergent winter oilseed rape collection for resistance against the two most important spring pests, the rape stem weevil (Ceutorhynchus napi) and the cabbage stem weevil (Ceutorhynchus pallidactylus). Special attention of the work will be put on the analysis of the genetic variation and inheritance of the glucosinolates in the leaves and in the stems and their relevance for insect resistance. Developed methods and identified insect resistant plant material will be distributed to cooperating private plant breeding companies and will be used as a resource to develop new oilseed rape cultivars with an improved insect resistance. For the selection of insect resistant Brassica-genotypes a large collection of old and current cultivars and breeding lines as well as resynthesized oilseed rape genotypes with a large variation in leaf and stem glucosinolate content and composition will be tested in growth chambers and field experiments. The inheritance of the glucosinolate content and composition as well as of the insect resistance will be studied and linked molecular markers will be developed for marker assisted breeding
