Genetic analysis of drought tolerance in perennial ryegrass (Lolium perenne L.) with phenological, physiological and molecular differentiation method. Subproject 2 (DRYeGRASS)
Project
Project code: 2818208615, 5788
Contract period: 01.09.2016
- 31.08.2019
Budget: 344,949 Euro
Purpose of research: Applied research
"German ryegrass, one of the most important forage grasses in Europe, is particularly affected by climate change because current varieties do not have sufficient tolerance to temporary drought stress. Progeny of divergently responding and origin-different diploid parents were available from previous projects. These were subjected to extensive phenotypic, physiological and molecular genetic studies. Several genomic regions involved in inheritance were identified. The developed lifespin profiler – GRASS generates quantitative profiles with 48 metabolites. Through this survey of the plant metabolome, a large number of new biomarkers have been identified. Thus, preselections are possible that reduce the initial populations to 1/3 but still contain 70% of the elites. The results of the project will thus allow faster and more efficient breeding of new ryegrass varieties better adapted to the effects of general climate change."
