Analysis of the cytotoxic potential of hemolymph constituents of Harmonia axyridis on human cells
Project
Project code: JKI-OW-08-1185
Contract period: 01.01.2012
- 31.12.2013
Purpose of research: Applied research
The harlekin ladybird Harmonia axyridis is a beetle originally native to Eastern Asia. It has been introduced world-wide as well as in Europe (since 1982) to control aphids. In the meantime it is also established in Germany. However, the widespread occurrence comprises also some problems: especially for fruit- and winegrowing but also for humans. It is already described that H. axyridis can induce inhalative allergies by the overwintering in houses, where it occurred in masses. However, so far it is unknown whether contaminants of the hemolymph in fruits and wine can induce health problems after consumption of these products.
