Transfer of leaf-morphological traits of Daucus carota relatives to the cultivated carrot for increasing the tolerance against abiotic and biotic stress factors.
Project
Project code: JKI-ZGO-08-0043
Contract period: 01.05.2004
- 30.04.2010
Purpose of research: Applied research
A number of Daucus relatives are characterised by specific leaf-morphological traits, such as thicker epidermal layers and cuticle as well as epicuticular wax layers. They are often adapted for dry and UV-intensive locations. A transfer of these characters into the cultivated carrot may be of interest with a view to tolerance to drought stress. Furthermore, epidermis, cuticle and waxy layers may be important as primary barrier against biotic stress factors e.g. fungi diseases or insects, which also of special interest for organic farming. The project will analyse correlations between the leaf-morphological traits and the tolerance against drought stress as well as the Alternaria blight disease. Further, the leaf traits will be transferred into the cultivated carrot by conventional crosses and the target traits will be selected in progenies. Selected pre-breeding lines will be tested for tolerance against the abiotic and biotic stress factors.
