Proteomic analysis into molecular toxicological effects of nano particles in human intestinal Caco-2 cells

Also in food stuff, nanotechnologies and associated manufactured nano particles are in-creasingly used. It is estimated that more than 90 different materials in more than 600 differ-ent food products are presently used. Since health risks of nanoparticles in food stuff are not yet scientifically proven and presence of nanomaterial in food stuff cannot be monitored rou-tinely, labelling of products containing nanoparticles is not mandatory. Only a few experi-mental studies with relevance to food applications have been carried out so far. In order to obtain first insights into mechanisms of toxicity induced by silver nanoparticles in vitro, it is envisaged to start proteomic investigations using human intestinal cells. Such kind of study can be used assist and to supplement ongoing classical cell culture experiments with silver nanoparticles and data can be used for safety evaluation of nanomaterials.
