Qualitative and quantitative analysis of toxicological relevant matters in the mainstream smoke of the waterpipe
Project
Project code: BfR-PRS-08-1322-423
Contract period: 01.01.2009
- 31.12.2010
Purpose of research: Applied research
In Germany the term smoking is generally associated with smoking of cigarettes. However, during the last years a new kind of smoking has become increasingly popular, especially among young people, that is the waterpipe tobacco smoking. Surveys from different geographic regions demonstrate that waterpipe tobacco smoking is a global trend and not only restricted to the Middle Eastern region. At present an estimation of the risk for human health caused by waterpipe smoking is still difficult due to the relative low number of reliable studies in this field. However, the existing studies clearly indicate that waterpipe smoke contains a range of toxicologically relevant compounds, for example carbon monoxide, nicotine, phenanthrene or catechol (see report 2009). Therefore it is inevitable to continue the ongoing studies at BfR and to expand the focus to other harmful substances as well. Furthermore the effect of waterpipe smoking on human health shall be investigated in volunteers (biomonitoring). This includes analyses of urine and blood.
