Innovation of farming systems based on diversified crop production and local knowledge with a view to maintaining the nutritional base and improving the nutritional and income situation. Work package 3 (HealthyLAND)
Project
Project code: 2813FSNU05
Contract period: 15.07.2015
- 14.07.2018
Budget: 159,188 Euro
Purpose of research: Applied research
Keywords: Uganda, Malawi, Kenya, global food security, knowledge transfer, networking, agricultural biodiversity, agroforestry, food security, human nutrition
The project (Work Package - WP 3) is part of the consortium project 'Crops for healthy diets - Healthy LAND', submitted by the Justus Liebig University (JLU) Giessen. The task of the University of Hohenheim (UHOH) is to identify potential and innovations for cultivation systems in cooperation with relevant universities in the partner countries (Malawi, Uganda, Kenya). The objectives of Work package 3 are: a) to assess the level of knowledge and motivation to use current cultivation practices, the importance of diversification of cultivation as well as recording current trends in cultivation and income generating measures; b) to identify the willingness of smallholder farmers to adopt modified cultivation measures; (c) to understand the link between agricultural innovation and the quality of food in the regional context; (d) to assess the labour requirements and other parameters of farming systems; (e) generate and transfer knowledge of improved farming systems from a nutritional-physiological point of view in the target region. Data collection is carried out jointly with the local partners under the auspices of UHOH. Tried and tested methods (e. g. infrared spectroscopy, C/N analyser) will be used. Participatory approaches are applied for the recording of local knowledge, land use and biodiversity in the context of field trials, field trips and discussions with actors. Both, the biophysical and socio-economic levels are examined. UHOH coordinates WP3, which is based on information on the status quo of food security (WP1) and surveys on the status of diversification of agricultural production (WP2) within the targeted research areas. UHOH supports in WP2 during field trips, contributes to the characterisation, analysis and evaluation of farming systems and provides inputs for the development of improved scenarios in WP4. UHOH supports relevant actors and the transfer of knowledge in WP4.
