Contamination of food during the processing is supposed to be the main cause of human infections with L. monocytogenes. The biofilm formation by L. monocytogenes on several distinct surface materials of food processing plant may be a potential source of contamination.There is a variety of studies concerning biofilm formation by L. monocytogenes especially those for the serotypes 4b, 1/2b and 1/2a often associated with human listerioses. However, it is currently not understood to what extent the capability of biofilm formation is conserved within the phylogenetic lineages. Furthermore, comparative studies to the pathogenicity of strains isolated from food are missing. There are no studies concerning bioflim formation on silicon that is commonly used in food processing plants as an alternative to rubber.Therefore, the objective of this project is to examine the biofilm formation by L. monocytogenes on silicon and to gain new insights into a possible correlation between biofilm formation and phylogenicity as well as pathogenicity by screening a large number of strains.
