Novel characterization of crop wild relatives and landraces resources as a basis for improved crop breeding (PGR Secure)
Project
Project code: JKI-ZL-08-3187
Contract period: 01.03.2011
- 31.08.2016
Purpose of research: Applied research
The aim of the project is to research novel characterization techniques for the utilization of genetic resources in plant breeding and the development of conservation strategies for crop wild relative and landrace diversity. The JKI is partner in workpackage 5 'Engaging the user community'. Within the framework of this workpackage an analysis of the strengths, weaknesses, chances and threats (SWOT) of the plant genetic resources conservation and use domaine will be implemented in 20 EU member states. The results will be discussed with about 90 representatives of the important stakeholder groups (Genebank, breeding research institutes, variety breeders, non-governmental organisations, governments). The joint recommendations will be published in a strategy paper. The mid-term aim consists in the improvement of the European cooperation in the field of conservation and utilization of plant genetic resources as a means of underpinning European food security in the face of climate change.
