Collaborative project: Nutrient inputs into drainage systems of grassland areas in northern Germany: Analysis to derive recommendations for action. Subproject 2 (Waterbuddies)
Project
Project code: 2817NA004
Contract period: 01.11.2018
- 31.10.2021
Budget: 93,857 Euro
Purpose of research: Applied research
Keywords: Animal husbandry, fertilization, crop production, feed crop production, farmyard manure, grassland, poison / toxins, animal nutrition, other forages, cattle
The aim of the project is to analyze the possibilities for agricultural influence, considering operational, hydrological and pedological interactions and their effects on the quality ditches. The implementation of the project requires the cooperation of experts from different fields of expertise. The Grassland Center provides the organizational, administrative and scientific project management. At the beginning of the project a main task involves the development of an operating network in order to create the basis for all experimental work. This includes the installation of four plots with different variations of fertilizer application in combination with two differently designed buffer strips at three test sites (clay soil, moor, groundwater-influenced mineral soil). The Chamber of Agriculture Lower Saxony investigates the crop yield, quality and nutrient withdrawal on different plots to assess effects on fodder quality, animal health and economy. This data constitutes the basis for the planned assessment of nutrient losses into drainage system as a function of different fertilizer applications carried out by the AG soil science of the University of Oldenburg. The crop yield and fodder quality data will additionally provide important input for the analysis of fodder effects conducted by the University of Göttingen. The 'Waterbuddies' project will be complemented by a study conducted by the department of water ecology at the University of Oldenburg, focussing on the development of a biomonitoring programm for ditches. Faunistic investigations will be carried out following a yet to be developed and tested methodology based on substrate-specific, quantitative data.
