Reseach in rabies epidemiologiy and scientific advise for a risk-based control of rabies infections in the frame of the tasks as national referencelab (NRL) and as OIE referencelab.
Rabies control in terrestrial animals was successfully completed in 2008 in Germany. Using oral rabies vaccination several neighboring countries also gaine the rabies-free status in recent years. However, increasing population densities in potential reservoir hosts including novel introduced species like the raccoon and the permanent risk of illegal introduction of infected pet animals require the maintenance of scientific expertise.
