Amaranth as biogas substrate rich in trace elements: selection for the development of practical amaranth lines for Bavarian site conditions

Purpose of research: Applied research
Since predominantly maize is used as biogas substrate, a lack of essential trace elements can occur during the fermentation process, because of rather low contents of those elements in maize biomass. Species of amaranth show high yield potentials and high contents of trace elements, particularly such as Cobalt and Nickel, which are important for the process stability in biogas fermenters. The aim of this project is to investigate an assortment of amaranth species and varieties to serve as energy crops. Therefore, the screening and selection will focus on ripening behavior for low-loss ensiling, plant stability, the potential yield and quality as biogas substrate. Within four years of cultivation and selection of amaranth species, promising varieties should be identified and developed for usage in Bavarian agriculture.
