Test procedure and sample for instrument performance control in 3D depth profiling for organic materials by ToF SIMS
Project
Project code: BfR-PRS-08-1329-522
Contract period: 01.04.2013
- 31.03.2015
Purpose of research: Basic research
Reference materials are essential, when accuracy and reliability of measurement results are to be ensured. Incorrect measurement results must be avoided, not least because they can cause substantial extra costs. Reference materials are 'controls' applied when measurement results are to be traced to a reference base (standards). Additionally, they are often used for the determination of measurement uncertainties and in calibration. For quality assurance in accredited and certified measurement and calibration laboratories, the use of reference materials is obligatory. In the emerging field of 'quasi' non-destructive depth profiling of organic materials by Ar gas cluster ion sources recently used at ToF-SIMS instruments there is a strong need for appropriate test samples and valid methods. The created reference materials shall be used at the BfR for the validation of ToF SIMS 3D depth profiles. The application areas include material characterization for the technology unit (FG75) as well as the validation of modern multilayered packaging materials, e.g. composite multilayered packaging materials for the unit of analytics and exposure assessment (FG72) and the validation of 3D depth profiles of organic materials like biopolymers or biological cells for the unit experimental research (FG73).
