Institution
Section overview
Description
The cultivation of corn, oil pumpkin, field bean, soy bean and winter turnip rape and the production of breeder´s seed stock is carried out at the Gleisdorf site on an area of 19 hectares. Other sites located in different Austrian growing areas are used for the testing, selection and production of starter seeds. In addition to this we conduct test exchanges with foreign breeding companies. In order to shorten the long breeding process, a winter breeding programme is carried out each year in Chile or in Tenerife. Gleisdorf is situated 380 m above sea level, has an average annual rainfall of 820mm, an average temperature of 8.2 oC, medium to heavy (pseudo-) gley- soils and is located in the Illyric climate zone. The combination of humid-warm weather conditions and a heavy soil favours the occurrence of a broad range of pests, in particular fungal infections, which is of great advantage for selection under natural infection conditions during the plant breeding process.
