The reservoir within the reservoir: geno- and phenotypic characteristics of STEC strains persistently colonizing cattle
Project
Project code: FLI-IMP-08-N-0021
Contract period: 01.10.2012
- 30.09.2015
Purpose of research: Applied research
Persistently infected cattle are the major reservoir for Shigatoxin (Stx)-producing E. coli (STEC) and enterohemorrhagic E. coli (EHEC) strains. As stx is bacteriophage encoded, novel STEC clones with unpredictable virulence for humans may constantly be formed in cattle. Strains classified as persistent colonizers are a potential source for stx-phages and will be characterized for the presence of genes specific for STEC and EHEC as well as for genes encoding virulence or fitness factors.
