Determining physical soil properties and soil water content to evaluate drought stress in wheat cropping systems
Project
Project code: JKI-SF-08-1256
Contract period: 01.10.2016
- 01.09.2021
Purpose of research: Applied research
Keywords: wheat, drought stress, crop growth factors, soil characteristics
Increasing drought stress threatens yield levels and yield stability in crop production systems. To evaluate drought stress, its yield (loss) effect and the interactive effects with biotic stress we frequently assess soil water contant and various crop growth factors of wheat at the JKI experimental station Dahnsdorf. By assessing grain size distribution and soil organic matter content in high spatial resolution in three soil depth (0-30, 30-60, 60-90 cm) and the respective volumetric water soil water content we can determine plant available water and hence drought stres throughout the growing season. In the course of the project we develop a detailed soil map, which is available to all interested working groups.
