Collaborative project: Development of an erysipelas vaccine for poultry – Subproject 2
Project
Project code: 2813400307
Contract period: 01.09.2008
- 31.08.2010
Budget: 254,768 Euro
Purpose of research: Experimental development
Erysipelas is a serious infectious diesease of poultry caused by the bacterium Erysipelothrix rhusiopathiae. The lack of commercial vaccines and antimicrobial pharmaceuticals with acceptable withdrawal periods makes erysipelas hard to control, particularly in laying hens. Alternative laying hen management is preferred by the public, but poses a greater risk in terms of biosecurity. For this reason, efficient diagnostic and preventive measurements are needed for the benefit of the producers, the consumers and for animal welfare. Based on experiences with manufacturing so-called autovaccines against erysipelas and an extensive collection of bacterial field isolations from various European states, we aim at the development of a commercial vaccine for use in poultry. The project partners will jointly establish methods to identify candidate vaccine seed material from the strain collection. By using optimised production methods, efficacious and well tolerated vaccines will be produced and tested.
