Collaborative project: Development of a water saving ridge crone irrigation technique - subproject 2
Project
Project code: 2815500911
Contract period: 15.06.2012
- 14.06.2015
Budget: 41,617 Euro
Purpose of research: Experimental development
There are losses of water in irrigation systems. The project aims to develop and introduce a water saving technique for ridge growing systems. Crops like carrots are grown on ridge crones and are irrigated across the whole area during dry periods. The new system is using a time-delayed application of water to ridge crones only. Well-established nozzle equipment will be designed in a way that a precise multi-stage application would save water losses, reduce ridge erosion and improve crop establishment. The project will be carried out within 36 months. After making pedological and technical investigations the new watering technique will be designed and established.A model will be equipped with measuring instruments to optimize the technique in cultivation practice on the field. Field investigations in carrot growing using the newly developed irrigation technique and, by way of comparison, a conventional technique will be carried out during an entire vegetation period. Emphasis is put on economical comparison of cost effectiveness but also technical realization and plant establishment. The project results will be spread widely at scientific and pubic level. It is planned to perform farmer’s field days, participate in scientific conferences and publish articles. The work will be carried out by a PhD student in part-time 50% under supervision of a professor at the University of Kassel.
