Collaborative project: Developing an sustanaible breeding project in German sheep breed with simultaneous use of rams. Subproject 3 (MuNaSch)
Project
Project code: 28RZ3044
Contract period: 25.04.2017
- 09.04.2020
Budget: 14,856 Euro
Purpose of research: Applied research
Within the framework of the project a sustainable breeding project with the simultaneous use of 3-4 rams in large flocks of sheep under extensive hat retentions will be established. Hereby, a method will be investigated in accordance with zootechnical legislations for the practical breeding farms and the under the current husbandry conditions of extensive pastoralism as well as the effects of the use of several rams at the same time on fertility and performance of ewes and lambs will be examined. For this, a system to use for parentage testing will be developed and an automatized classification of rams to their lambs according to their parental classification in the existing organizational structure of the joint federal herd book program ovicap will be provided. Through the simultaneous testing of several groups of half-sisters and half-brothers under extensive grazing conditions under practical conditions can provide information about the influence of genotype and environment. In the context of the nationwide in 2014 introduced breeding valuation for sheep and thereby through significantly better evaluation of environmental influences and also a better data organisation, significantly better breeding values can be expected. Moreover, animal welfare and survival of fittest are playing an important part in extensive-oriented sheep breeding.
