Novel Hop extracts for neuroregeneration (NeHoReg)
Project
Project code: G2/N/19/06
Contract period: 01.10.2019
- 30.09.2022
Budget: 552,126 Euro
Purpose of research: Applied research
Keywords: Neurodegenerativ diseases, phytopharmacy, regenerativ medicine, secondary plant compounds, developments of product concept, novel extracts of hop for neuroregeneration
Neurodegenerative diseases are closely related to the increasing age of society. Currently available drugs for treating neurodegernative diseases like Alzheimer´s disease and Parkinson´s disease only fight the symptoms but not cure the disease. Novel therapeutic approaches target the activation of regeneration of affected arial by the administration of special compounds. Some secondary plant compounds of hop have already been shown to have interesting effects on neuronal regeneration in vitro, thus may be suitable for a use in regenerative medicine. Moreover, former studis show a general consumers interest on innovative hop based drugs.
Aim of this project is the generation of an extended market by a novel product for hop processing companies in Bavaria. One target of this project is the development of a special method (patent pending) for the extraction of valuable neuroactive hop extracts to get on pilot scale. Therefore, a special extract from waste material of hop processing, which is so far used as animal feed, will be obtained and is intended to be used in phytopharmacy. For that a product concept should be evolved and tested, which meet the needs of an early stage of development and inherent risks.
