While about 84% of German private households use iodized salt, no reliable data exist on the use of iodized salt in processed foods in Germany. In order to elaborate reliable data on the share of processed foods which are produced with iodized salt, a representative market survey shall be carried out for those product groups that are essential for the provision of iodine given their salt content and the consumed quantities. The market survey shall cover the use of iodized salt in foods processed by skilled food trades as well as by manufacturing in the food industry. The objective of the project is to collect data that allow conclusions on the prevalence of iodized salt in processed foods in Germany. Consequently, this information shall allow to determine more precisely whether the provision of iodized salt to consumers due to its use in the household and in processed foods is sustainable.
