Keywords: Animal husbandry, pest/disease control
Mites of Varroa are the main reason for bee deaths in winter. In Germany nearly every bee colony is infected by mites of varroa. Without control measures, damages occur within a very short time and the bee colonies die after two to three years. The measures to combat mite infestation currently require a combination of several methods, although there is still no safe and easy-to-use agent. The EIP project MAJA aims to develop a new type of metering device for formic acid in beehives targeted application of the acid leads to effective control of the varroa mite infestation. As a result, a sensory guided and controllable evaporation device is to be created to enable precise and needs-based regulation and ventilation for treatment in different concentrations in beehives. The device is to be tested and modeled on bee colonies in order to later enable broad use in the EU.
