Enhancing both soil carbon sequestration and fertility while reducing soil greenhouse gas emissions through designer biochar application
Project
Project code: 2814ERA01A
Contract period: 01.11.2014
- 31.10.2017
Budget: 15,100 Euro
Purpose of research: Applied research
The main goal of 'Designchar4food' is to synthesize regional biochar performance results to develop a decision support system, through computer simulation models and/or decision trees. Literature reviews and meta-analyses will identify key biochar properties, which allows production and evaluation of designer biochars that concert to soil and environmental properties. The results will be made available to global climate organizations as tools to reduce GHG production under different soil conditions and N fertilizations (e.g., urea, manures, etc.). Further, the interactions between biochar and soil matrix will be determined to investigate whether designer biochars will affect mineralization of indigenous soil organic matter in various land use scenarios. A common literature review and meta-analyses to identify biochar properties reducing GHG formation will be conducted until mid-2014. Access to internet and databases is provided by University Gießen. Results will be used to produce (partners USA) and evaluate designer biochars until October 2015. In lab and greenhouse experiments, biochars will be tested for effects on productivity and GHG-emissions by determining GHG-cost to yield ratios for biochar-soil combinations. Needed lab/greenhouse facilities are available.
