Thuringia is truffle land. The mixed deciduous forests on the loess- and limestone soils between Ilm, Unstrut and Saale are the natural habitat of the Burgundy truffle, Tuber aestivum, which is appreciated by gourmets. The 'Bundesartenschutzverordnung' in Germany prohibits the taking of truffles in the wild. The Cultivation is permitted and has been again gaining in importance in Germany. Perigord truffle, Tuber melanosporum, is expensive. It is successfully grown in southern Europe, not yet in Germany. The climatic conditions in Thuringia offer good conditions for cultivation experiments. Our cooperation from Thuringian farmers and international research institutes would like to establish truffle cultivation in Thuringia and optimize the yield of new plantations through comparative basic research and field trials. The focus is on the local burgundy truffle.
