Seeding material of marjoram is currently imported and with bad quality available on the market. The resulting necessary creation of a domestic production however has not been successful over the last decades. Nevertheless, promising source material was created. This will be used to generate improved cultivars and consequently seeds in a double-tracked process. On one hand, low-risk line breeding will be used to significantly improve marjoram’s yield, oil-content, agronomic suitability and drought tolerance. On the other hand, hybrids will be developped. To that end, inbred lines will be multiplied and crossed on the basis of combining ability checks. The resulting descendants are expected to be characterized by an excelling performance. Important for the utilization of results is the simultaneous process of seed material multiplication.
