Breeding and agronomy of novel, low-vicine faba beans and adoption as domestic protein feed (Abo-Vici)
Project
Project code: 2815EPS065
Contract period: 01.03.2017
- 31.01.2020
Budget: 36,736 Euro
Purpose of research: Applied research
Overall-objectives: to enlarge the hectarage of faba beans in Germany, as contribution to home-grown protein feed. A novel winter-type faba beans will be bred which is low in (antinutritive) vicine/convicine (V+C). Botanical, genetic, breeding and agronomy issues of V+C will be solved. Value of these beans as feed for laying hens will be evaluated. Objectives for THIS section of the project: to satisfy tasks in genetic and breeding research in the project, to provide seed for research of the other partners, to coordinate this research net, to transfer results into the community. Entire Project Coordinator Link (Göttingen). Breeding and breeding research for all partners is jointly conducted by Link & Sass (Hohenlieth). Defined faba beans will be employed, they include near-isogenic contrasts for normal vs. low vicine/convicine (V+C). Agronomy tasks (partner Schmidtke, Dresden): Map agro-meteorologically convenient sites for winterbeans; assess effect of V+C on resistance, N2-fixation and balance sheet, water uptake (incl. spring vs. winter types). Tasks in breeding and breeding research (partners Link & Sass): Development of a NIRS-calibration for V+C-breeding, breeding of a first novel low V+C-winterbean variety. Tasks in molecular genetics (partners Krzcal/Höfer, Neustadt & Link): Reference transcriptome (V+C) and candidate genes; develop SNP & fine map the V+C-locus; narrow down the list of candidate genes with bulked segregant transcriptome analyses; MACE to further narrow down the list; bioinformatics identification of the V+C-gene. Tasks to assess feedstuff value (partner Rodehutscord, Hohenheim): chemical-analytic characterization & amino acid digestibility of the novel bean types. Tasks in animal nutrition (partner Halle, Braunschweig): two performance trials with laying hens on the V+C-effect and on the maximum reasonable dose for low V+C beans in laying hens. All partners: integration & delivery of the results.
