Project code: MRI-PBE-08-1010 Alternative Proteinquellen
Contract period: 01.01.2019 - 31.12.2028
Purpose of research: Experimental development
Keywords: alternative protein resources, nutrition, health, intestinal diseases, algae, pulses, insects

In order to provide the fast-growing world population with the necessary protein, alternative sources of protein (compared to meat and other animal products) are needed. These potential innovative sources should display better CO2- and resources-balances, to allow a sustainable production. These could be insects, algae, but also plant sources including pulses or cereals. First studies showed that the biological quality and the digestibility of some of these alternative proteins may be lower than those of usual animal proteins resulting in higher quantities of proteins reaching the large intestine. A higher protein concentration in the colon could increase the risk for intestinal diseases. However, up to now, only little is known about the bioavailability of these proteins/amino acids in the small intestine and their impact on gut health.
